Balance bikes are becoming increasingly popular as a great stepping stone before having a fully functioning bike with peddles. My son has been using one since he was 2 years old (he is now 4) and goes everywhere on it. He initially started off on a wooden balance bike that after so much use fell apart. We can screw it back together, however as we were in the process of fixing it were given a second hand one that is metal and more like a bike that my son absolutely loves. The metal one is from Halfords and has a place where my son can rest his feet as well as a kickstand which he loves using.
I think one of the biggest benefits to using a balance bike is that your child learns how to balance. So I am only guessing that needing to use stabilizers on a proper bike may not be necessary at all. I know for one we won’t be using them with my son when he is ready or wants a proper bike. So far he still loves his balance bike.
I always think it is a great idea to look on ebay when looking for a balance bike as you may be lucky and get one second hand. This is a great way to test the waters and a lot of the time you can end up getting a nearly new one for a fraction of the cost of a new one.
Alternatively if you want to get a new one but get a good price then this page will help you. Below are popular balance bikes and most can be found at a reasonable price.

Tidlo First Balance Bike by John Crane
The Tidlo first balance bike is available in both red and blue. It is a completely wooden balance bike that has a useful carry handle. As someone whose son owns a wooden balance bike, I would caution that the carry handle isn’t very comfortable and quite thin. As a mother I have found it difficult to carry with using the handle. The Tidlo first balance bike has pneumatic tyres and a height adjustable seat. It also has easy grip hand bars.
